Om Ognisko
In the grand dining room of the Polish Hearth Club, diners enjoy lightly modernised Polish cuisine under the watchful eye of portraits of revered sons -- and daughters -- of the old country. The clientele is a relaxed mix of faithful diners who have been coming here since it opened in 1943 and a much younger, even studenty, crowd. The menu changes quarterly. Recent favourites include barszcz czerwony, or beetroot soup, and lamb shashlick in tomato and tarragon sauce. Beware the vodka list, with its sixteen devilish potions. Very nice, succinct wine list for the faint of heart. Try for a terrace table for balmy days.
Opening hours:
7 days a week 12.00-3.00pm and 6.30-11.00pm. Closed Bank Holidays.

Three of us went to Ognisko for an early lunch. We were the first customers there but the ambience was warm and comfortable. Service was very good, unhurried but efficient. We did not feel rushed, but did not have to wait too long for each course. We expected more specifically Polish cuisine and were a bit disappointed that there were so few Polish dishes, but that was the only negative. Otherwise, recommended for a relaxed meal in restrained and dignified surroundings.Recension
Highly recommended both for its food and for the helpful and friendly, but not intrusive, level of service.Recension
Ognisko met the high expectations I had for it wonderfully. Food and service are excellent, the waiters were attentive (although there were only a few tables to watch at the time) and the price was reasonable for two with two courses each and a bottle of wine.Besökare
