Recension

Four of us wen to El Gran Cafe, Barcelona at the end of December. The decor was fantastic. Three of us enjoyed our meal highly, whilst one of us was not keen on his main course. Service was a little rushed too, as if they couldn't wait to get rid of us.

I went to IEl Gran Cafe in Barcelonae a year ago and had the best meal of my life. This meal, I must say was one of the worst. The onion soup had what seemed like stale croutons, my lamb was raw in the midddle rather than pink - the waiter insisted it was supposed to be like that - no, it should not. My partner ordered beef with mash, it turned up looking okayish, but the beef underneath the mash was raw and the beef that wasn't under the mash was cooked - not good. Service however was.

Set menus displayed on toptable were not available and no explanation given. Food definitely only mediocre. Medium rare breast of duck was cold so sent it back and it was returned possibly Microwaved! More unbelievable was the mad pianist who glared and shook his head at us obviously thinking we were making too much noise though the whole restaurant was buzzing. He actually told us to shut up! He stopped playing and maitre'd had to tell him off. We did'nt bother with desert and coffee. Unbelievable

El Gran Cafe was a tourist trap! Yes, the ambience is like a turn-of-the-century French cafe, but the food is completely underwhelming. Mushroom salad to start was cold and lifeless and onion soup tasted like it was made with a stock cube. Segovia-style lamb was nice, but a bit overcooked. Duck with plum/grapedfruit sauce was a bit overdone/chewy as well. We weren't optimistic about dessert so left after 2 courses. Very disappointed.

After a little trouble finding El Gran Cafe, we eventually found it down a cobbled alley & immediately liked the look of it! It looks very Victorian from the outside & doesn't disappoint inside. The decoration is amazing, with chandeliers and old wooden furniture. It really feels like you’re eating in the Victorian times, especially with the piano player, who really adds to the atmosphere. The food was good value for such a great setting. The lamb and chocolate biscuit pudding were delicious!

Overcooked, mediocre food. We had the Monkfish which was overcooked and rubbery. The meat and pasta dish was cold. Very disappointing

Great meal, well presented and served. Sat in balcony area with views over the rest of the restaurant. Highly reccomended for any visitors to Barcelona looking for a special meal.

We have dined at this restaurant before when visiting Barcelona.. We chose El gran Cafe as the ambiance and interior is lovely. We were given probably the best table in the house but the food and service was not as good as we have prviously experienced.
