d'Vijff Vlieghen is a beautiful restaurant with lots of atmosphere and a celebrity clientele. The food is lovely though not fantastic, and quite pricey. A nice holiday experience but not somewhere I'd recommend to locals.

Everything at The Five Flies was lovely. Pricey, but we were expecting that. Once we had decided to ignore the price, the food was decidedly delicious. My advice for the overwhelmed is to order whatever you know you like; you won’t be disappointed. The deserts deserve special praise. We couldn’t pin down exactly what The Sauce tasted of but we agreed that the closest description was, “the dreams of children”. That course led to many interesting conversations. My recommendation is to go. Just go. But make sure you have enough money to be careless with the wine list. Phew!

The Five Flies (don't try to pronounce it in Dutch) is certainly on the touristy map but yet it manages to stay charming - oldie worldie tiles on the walls, it's alleged to be the oldest restaurant in Amsterdam. The food, however, is not old fashioned at all but a brave attempt at mixing Dutch staples (brown shrimps, chicory...) with modern influences (a liquorice jus which worked really well with guinea fowl). A good wine list, a bit pricey but top marks for effort and charm.

The d'Vijff Vlieghen (The 5 Flies) really did live up to its reputation. It was full of character & cosy and the service was impeccable. We had the surprise menu and were advised that 4 or 5 courses was enough for which we were grateful as we were very full at the end! The food was not things we would have chosen - perch, rabbit, suckling pig, so we would never have realised how delicious they were. We would definitely come again if in Amsterdam.

The d'Vijff Vlieghen was perfect in all respects. The food (we decided on the 5 course 'surprise' menu). The surprise was that everything was beautifully cooked and presented. The staff we very friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere was just perfect. Can't recommend highly enough. Good for business or just for a quiet meal for two.

Visiting Amsterdam for the first time and recomended by a local, I opted for the touristic but not touristy ,"vijff vlieghen" They define themselves as "New Dutch cuisine", though I really couldn't feel the "dutch touch". We went for the Rembrandt menu: 4 courses well balanced, the first one interesting, Lamb shank rilettes with jelly of honey-caramel and apple, but the rest, not very remarkable: the grill steak, cold when served. Ambience superb and decent food. Worthy and cozy for the money.

The Five Flies belies it's name. Very good food, innovative without pushing the boundaries of decency. The four course menu was intriguing with excellent nuances of flavour. The juxtaposition of a light white fish with subtle lemongrass flavours complemented a dollop of eel presented flaked. Portions were satisfying. Service was good, unobtrousive and with plenty of smiles. The wine list was a trifle disappointing with few novelties. Mostly standards available in good wine shops in the UK.

d'Vijff Vlieghen (The 5 Flies) was recommnded to us by Food & Bev. Mgr of our Cruise liner, who was Dutch and we weren't disappointed. The setting is amazing - very old house with lots of old wood beams. The food & service totally delightful and all in all a very special evening for us both. We opted for the a la carte - two courses - rather than the longer courses menus and including a nice bottle of wine it was £100. I would definitely recommend for special occasions.

The 5 Flies was such a special and memorable experience. Totally different to anything we've done before. We were put in an alcove, with a table facing out to the rest of the room, so felt like a King and Queen! Loved it all - great food, great ambience and impeccable service. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting The Dam for a more than novel experience.
