About Vanilla Black

Your mother’s mantra of ‘eat your vegetables’ probably never brought to mind dishes quite like this. Vanilla Black, originally from York but now located in the City of London, smashes the stereotype of bland, lentil-laden hippie dishes, and instead takes a modern, imaginative approach to vegetarian cuisine. Spacious and done with art deco-esque flair, Vanilla Black’s cool and comfortable dining room sets the stage for its innovative cuisine. Dishes such as hickory smoke duck egg and ducketts Caerphilly pudding and sweet potato vindaloo with saffron risotto are sure to make an impression on even the most die-hard carnivore. Desserts like carrot cake and orange sorbet with crystallised coriander don’t disappoint on the flavour front either.

Vanilla Black is an exquisite restaurant with a stylish ambiance that has a 30's hint in its decor. Imaginative dishes superbly presented, pricey but worth it. The lentil dahl a perfect starter, amazing geen beans with a lemon paste and I defy any one to find finer puds, the ice cream with tomato swirl was out of this world. Ever wondered how to crystalise a corriander leaf? You will want to know having tasted this elaborate decoration. Attentive and professional staff. All vegetarian dishes

The menu at Vanilla Black is quite exciting and the food does deliver but I did feel it was a little too sweet and a bit stodgy. In comparison to another vegetarian restaurant that has just opened, this seems more like comfort food than a healthy lifestyle choice. Great presentation and interesting concepts, but lacks a little in ambience due to the location too. 3 courses for £30 is reasonable though.

Had lunch with a colleague mid-week. I'm not a vegetarian but was pleasantly surprised with the range, quality and edibility of the food. Service was fantastic. Lunch for two (3 courses, al a carte, no alcohol) came to about £65, which is acceptable for a business lunch, but to me ultimately seemed high as I’m somewhat primitive and generally relate dishes to meat content! I would recommended it if you need an upmarket place to take a vegetarian client.
