About The Bean Tree
Set cosily in a converted cottage in the heart of Harpenden, The Bean Tree offers dedicated foodies a destination restaurant to visit again and again. The ambience is calm and relaxed with a stylish modern slant. There is a really lovely walled courtyard sheltered by an Indian bean tree -- hence the name -- where diners can enjoy themselves in the warmer months. The menu is
French and no mistake. Chef Pascal Deroubaix is passionate about the quality and freshness of his ingredients, and he takes great care with his sourcing. The seasonally-changing menu includes wonderful dishes like
starter of steamed scallops, fine beans and trompette de mort casserole with paprika butter sauce, main course of shelled lobster in lobster veloute with glazed winter veg, and pud of blueberry mousse with kiwi compote. Blistering wine list.

Another superb meal at the Bean Tree. Starters included king prawns, scallops and quail - all of which would have suited me! (I opted for the quail in the end). Service and presentation excellent as ever. Although the wine list tends to the expensive, we found a very fine New Zealand sauvignon at £20. Our guests were mightily impressed and would all return.Review
The Bean Tree in Harpenden is quite simply a great restaurant. Very hard to find anything to fault. We decided to treat ourselves to Christmas Day Lunch. It was superb. The service is faultless, the food delicious and the surroundings spot-on. Good wine list too. From the set menu, I had the duck confit to start - which was magnificant, as was the beef main. My wife had the halibut, fresh from Devon, which was outstanding also. Special mention for the warm winter fruit salad - really good.Review
The staff at The Bean Tree are very attentive...within seconds of mentioning our friend's bad back, a cushion was provided for her dining chair! The food was very well presented and we were impressed with the simultaneous arrival and subsequent departure of our plates by two synchronised waiters. The wine list was extensive and the Zinfandel proved to be a good choice. My only gripe would be that we had to pay for our coffee refills which was a bit mean after spending £165 for three people?Visitors
