About Spice Merchant - Beaconsfield

This chic restaurant in Bucks is one of a small chain of classy Indian restaurants across the south east founded by Bashir Islam. Bashir, who's been part of the industry for over 30 years, wants you to enjoy yourself. Well, if he insists... This is where the Spice Merchant Group Chef, Vijay Anand, is based, so you get to savour dishes made with his own highly-experienced hands. You can't go wrong if you start with his bataki nazrana - tender tandoori duck and potatoes encased in filo pastry, served with a sweet n' spicy red onion and mango chutney. For a refreshingly different main course order the mirchi ka kekda - peppers stuffed with kerala-style flaked crab meat served with a fabulous febugreek flavoured sauce. Plenty of veggie options and tandoori specials too. Spice Merchant has recently won an award for the best and innovative restaurant in the south.

The Spice Merchant does fantastic food and has a great menu. My only negative about the place is that it can feel somewhat rushed as they tend to bring the main course out the minute you've finsihed your starter. You can therefore end up having finished your meal within an hour which is a little disappointing given that it's not a cheap place and the food is such high quality.

The food at the Spice Merchant was almost as good as I remember it being, as it'd been a while since my last visit. However the service detracted from the evening in that they kept asking us if we wanted more drinks and hung over us just a bit too much. At £60 for two with only one glass of wine its not a cheap night and I think it will be a littel while again before I go there which is a shame as the food is good, just not good enough to overcome the shortfalls of the staff!
