About Safa

A refuge in the middle of Camberwell Church Street, Safa serves some of the best Indian dishes in the area. It looks reassuringly modern - black armless chairs, banquette seating, smart lampshades - and it is. The mains menu is cleanly divided into lamb, chicken, biriyani, tandoori, fish and seafood, and vegetarian, complemented by the usual condiments (papadums can be plain or spicy). All taste terrific, no doubt thanks to the head chef (who you can watch at work in his open plan kitchen) who has vowed to stay true to the origin of each traditional dish. The results are flavours and pleasures you'd normally expect from home made cooking. Keep room for the vanilla ice cream. Safa is one of only a handful of restaurants licensed to deliver alcohol to your home.

Safa remains our favourite Camberwell / Denmark Hill area restaurant. The chicken xacutti (sp?) is simply one of the best Indian dishes I have ever tasted. The king prawn main dish was also wonderful as was the lamb dish. The only disappointments were the starters. The "Indian pizza" was nearly £5 and consisted of one small round piece of bread no more than 5 cm in diameter...one of the worst value starters I've ever purchased. The dal had the consistency of soup, also very disappointing.

Safa continues to serve the most delicious and spicy Indian food in London. If Safa were in central London, it would be impossible to book a table. The Chicken Xacutti has to be the tastiest South Asian chicken dish in London. The veggie samosas were lovely and packed with fresh vegetables instead of the typical peas and potatos. The service was fantastic, a huge improvement over prior recent visits. Could it be because we were joined by two beautiful women? I'm not complaining.

Working in East Ham I rarely bother with curry away from my trusted favourites but the rave reviews tempted me to Safa and it's close to my girlfriend. Great meal but we made the mistake of picking the Rugby World Cup final nuight so it took 30 minutes for our order to arrive as the bustling takeaway trade was dealt with. Fortunatley we'd recorded the first half hour and next time we may be well be part of the takeaway trade. The quality food would make an ideal accompanyment to any TV sport
