For a literal taste of traditional life on Tenerife, Restaurant Sabor Canario is hard to fault. Part of a gorgeous 16th-century manor house hotel next to the town hall of cobblestone La Orotava, most of its original features are characterfully preserved, including the Mudéjar-style carved ceilings. The atmosphere is effortlessly rural and cosy; much like the adored ‘like grandma makes’ food. You eat really well at this restaurant. Grilled meat seems to be the Sabor Canario speciality – from incredible sirloin steaks to rabbit cooked three times. Everything looks and smells wonderful coming out of the kitchen. And the old wine cellar’s a corker, too. If you find it all too perfect to leave; stay. Above Sabor Canario are eight rustic rooms.
