About Rhubarb

toptable Dining Awards 2007 - Winner: Best Ambience category
Minimalists and speed-eaters, avert your eyes. Rhubarb has arrived in all its opulent, theatrical, lingering glory. Set in twenty acres of gorgeous parkland yet a short drive from the Royal Mile, Rhubarb and its hotel home, Prestonfield, are the creation of James Thomson, who bought you the Witchery and Tower restaurants. A black-kilted porter escorts you to Rhubarb's two oval Regency dining rooms decorated in mad baroque splendour, with giant chandeliers, silk wall coverings, and
ancestral portraits. The menu, created by chef John McMahon, uses classic techniques and modern inspiration to transform ingredients sourced from small artisan suppliers into sublime grub. Try starter of Gewurztraminer poached foie gras au tronchon with pickled cherries,
main course of breast of Loue chicken on tarragon risotto, and top it
with the signature assiette of rhubarb desserts. There are more than five hundred wines to choose from, and more than one hundred malts.
Linger after your meal in the Leather or Tapestry room and let your senses swoon.

To be honest we were quite disappointed with Rhubarb. The setting is beautiful, and you're first led into a lounge with an open fire for drinks which is very atmospheric. However, it was downhill from there. My partner didn't finish his starter as it tasted of water, the rest of the food was ok but not outstanding, our drinks weren't served, our bill was miscalculated and the service was less than attentive. Overall, it was disappointing and too expensive for the quality of the food offered.

This was our first visit to Rhubarb and definitely will not be our last. The surroundings were wonderful, the service impecable, the food mouthwatering and the overall experience better than most other five star establishments. The Rhubarb tasting plate desert was amazing with four different puddings made of Rhubarb - well worth the £10 price tag. The festive menu at £35 for three courses was excellant value and the steak was mouthwatering.

Rhubarb was a wonderful place for dinner - impeccable service and food. It is an ideal venue for a romantic evening although I went with work colleagues and we had a fantastic time too.
