About Pennyblacks
Pennyblacks is a big bar with a pub feel and great location on the Gas Street canal basin at the far end of the MailBox shopping development in central Birmingham. On sunny days and weekends, the area buzzes with people and narrowboats passing by the small terrace. It's a lovely, open-plan space - high ceilings, lots of wood, modern fittings. Although new, Pennyblacks' is its old fashioned menu of dishes that would've been enjoyed in the area over a century ago. If a traditional roast chicken with sage and onion stuffing sandwich, £5.50, seems to light, there's always honey-roast ham, eggs and chips, £9.50. Come Sunday, everyone's up for the roast, £9.95. There are always six to seven real ales on tap. Tempting stuff.
Opening hours:
Mon - Thu: 10am - 11pmFri - Sat: 10am - 12amSun: 10am - 10:30pm
Pennyblacks is in The Good Pub Guide 2007.

The restaurant was very spacious and had a good atmosphere. The staff good if a little slow at times. I was disappointed that they added a service charge with no mention on the menu. It seemed sneaky. The food was excellent. Altogether Pennyblacks was good, but nothing special.Review
Penny Blacks in the Mailbox has a relaxed atmosphere, suitable for a Sunday afternoon after walking along the canal. Staff were very friendly and helpful and food was simple but gorgeous. Highly RecommendedReview
Restaurant wasnt very busy and it was very cold due to high aircon, waitress seems to switch between coming over every five seconds (when we werent waiting for anything) then dissapearing for ages when we wanted to order stuffVisitors
