About Il Giardinetto

It may be like dining in a garden, or more like a design-concept fantasy forest, and it's very smart indeed. The award-winning decor features tree-like columns, teal banquettes, forest-floor coloured carpets, and nature-coloured details. The service is of the professional, courteous type, and the Eixample crowds who favour this perennially popular spot love it. The classic and new Italian menu features dishes like baked brie with marmalade of tomato and apple, Giardinetto Risotto of mushrooms and parmesan, fettuccine with truffles in season, chicken scallops with mint, and plums with armagnac. Piano music tinkles in the background.

Il Giardinetto seemed an interesting alternative to Spanish in Barcelona and particularly since vegetarian dishes are easier on Italian menus than Catalan/Spanish. Closed when we arrived (despite our confirmed 2030 booking) but we went for a drink and came back at 2100 (when it did open). Food interesting and varied and better than average wine list. White Rioja particularly good. Service bizarre, waiter refused to speak Spanish, only Catalan so most of the time our phrase book was useless.

At 9pm, we had been the first diners to arrive at Il Giardinetto and were allocated the best table to be had. The place quickly filled after 9.30pm, and its apparent popularity with locals speaks for itself. Appropriately named, the interior design has a garden theme, albeit bordering on kitsch. We had crustatia risotto and steak paillard as mains, both of solid quality and arriving promptly. A selective wine list offers good choice. Would recommend as one of the better dining experiences in B.

In a fairly quiet area of Barcelona and quite difficult to find for the first-time tourist, but well worth it. Language problems meant the food order went slightly wrong - a well done steak (not veal as ordered) ended served up very rare - but most of the food we did have was very nice and the staff were very attentive. Large choice of wine and very reasonably priced for such a good restaurant. Loved the decor - it was like sitting under a tree (you'd have to see it to appreciate it).
