About Hengist
Hengist restaurant in Aylesford is a terrific modern eclectic restaurant retrofitted into the pleasing surroundings of an ancient edifice. The recent makeover is courtesy of the inspired team behind Thackeray’s in Tunbridge Wells, where Richard Phillips holds a Michelin star. He’s executive chef here too, with Jean-Marc Zanetti in the kitchen. Décor is marvelously modern and cool, making smart use of wood, stone and suede with funky detailing like smoked glass or taffeta curtains, while the al fresco terrace is the only place to be when summer comes. The menu is modern French and the wine list inspired.
Please note there is a turn around time for tables at busy times.
Opening hours:
Tues - Sat 12pm - 2:30pm & 6:30pm - 10:30pmSun 12pm - 4pm
Hengist is named for a triumphant Saxon chief, the first king of Kent.

Food was excellent. It was just a pity thst the service did not match. we were led to a small room on the first floor that resembled a 60s disco - red lighting, black glass tables and black plastic high-backed chairs. Drinks arrived quickly, but we waited 25 minutes for our food orders. Food was excellent when it arrived, but took so long that we passed on starters. The room was also rather cold. On the way out, we had to wait 10 minutes for someone to retrieve our coats.Review
Having visited once before and enjoyed the experience, we decided to return with more guests. We went on a Saturday evening. Alas, this visit was not too good. We booked the table at 8.30, however, our food order was not taken until 9:15. The food is generally good. But, on this occasion, my main course was somewhat cold. Possible lack of staff contributed to the issues. It was a busy evening. A tad disappointed.Review
Had an excellent meal at Hengist. Romney Marsh lamb was succulent, full of flavour. Dishes were highly original. Service was first-rate.Visitors
