Fortnum and Mason may be updating itself, but St. James's restaurant on the 4th floor is reassurringly untouched. At around £30 it's pricier than tea in many London hotels, but the food and surroundings are hard to beat, and the service is pretty good too. High tea and afternoon tea both come with very light scones and a choice of pastries The only let down is the rather stifling cloakroom.

The food was lovely, but not outstanding, which I expected from F&M. Also, the choice is quite limited. Service was warm and professional, but there wasn't much atmosphere. It is deliberately formal, but it also felt a bit dull. The toilets are lovely and clean. I'd go again, but I wouldn't rush.

Afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason was disappointing. Portions were small, sandwiches nothing special, scones were unalluring and the tiny offerings of clotted cream and jam was very mean. Overpriced for what was served.

Fortnum & Mason's Afternoon Tea was lovely. The service was spot on & you felt like you were back in the 40's. Probably more suitable for shoppers rather than as a special occasion though.

Although the St James's Restuarant at Fortnum and Mason lacked a buzz and the younger generation(!) it was relaxing and the service was good. My lunch could have been a touch warmer and I would have loved a cappuccino to finish off but the machine was broken.
