About Ben Bowers Restaurant

Good food is what brings the people of Nottingham to Ben Bowers Restaurant and the dancing keeps them there till late. Housed in a former pharmacy built in 1877, the restaurant is something of an institution and offers modern food in relaxed, candlelit surroundings. The menu changes fortnightly: start with lemon and basil crumbed monkfish with caperberry and onion mayo, then try pan-fried medallions of beef with a sauce of green peppercorns, Dijon mustard, cream and armagnac. Veggies will relish the zesty Thai-spiced vegetable stir-fry, authentically flavoured with lemon grass, chilli, garlic, coriander, lime and coconut and served on jasmine rice. The sticky toffee pudding is knockout stuff but for a touch of retro glory go for the individual baked Alaska, updated with a mixed berry coulis. Totally hot, totally cool – literally. On live music evenings the tables are spirited away and the dining turns to dancing.

Poised to write a review and I can't actually remember what we ate, which sums up the food really. That said the Pinot Noir for around £15 was good value.

Fantastic meal out with my family and exellent value for money with the 2 for 1 meal offer. Only £20 per head including drinks and a complimentary soup starter from the chef plus sorbet before our mains!! Highly recommended. Can't wait to go back!

Review

The restaurant had a party downstairs, the slightly spoiled an otherwise enjoyable evening out. The service was a little slow, more than made up for by a selection of freebies mini starters (I would have paid for the lime sorbet, it was great) and the engaging personality of the owner (who obviously cares & plays the piano well). Steak was a bit thin, and although it tasted good you'd expect more meat for a £20 steak. Just next time, close the door on the party downstairs, it killed the atmos!
