About Barry at the Tureen

The young, old and ageless of Brighton have been contentedly eating at the spot now named Barry's at the Tureen since 1964. A small restaurant, it is something of a mini-institution among locals who love the fact that it still has the same Liberty print banquette seating it had 20 years ago. This is a restaurant that's comfortable in its own skin. Much like owner, chef and maitre'd, Barry, who on any given night knows 90 per cent of the diners. His reliable menu is predominantly English, especially the desserts (crumble, steamed pudding…) and he'll occasionally cook pasta and vegetarian dishes. Really, he aims to cater for everybody. For those who favour a quiet meal in a personable, intimate environment, Barry at the Tureen does very well.

The most memorable and possibly the most enjoyable dining experience we've had. The food was excellent and the staff we're lovely. As well as being a great cook, Barry is friendly and interesting. If only there was more room in my belly. Obviously we will recommend 'Barry at the Tureen' to everyone!

Barry at the Tureen lived up to all expectations. The food was very good, in particular the crab stuffed mushrooms. Barry himself is a marvel, how he manages to do everything himself whilst also being the perfect host is remarkable. What more can I say, a lovely meal, excellent host, I look forward to returning shortly.Review
Barry is the best thing about Barry at the Tureen. It's almost as if he's invited you round to his home for some delicious home-cooked food as he tells you about his life and asks you about yours. Only difference being that you have to pay for it at the end, but worth every penny. It's good to find these little gems in Brighton, to support the little guy rather than visiting another chain. We were the only people in that evening so your experience may differ but worth a visit.Visitors
