We visited Malmaison Brasserie - Birmingham on Friday 28th December for lunch. The restaurant was quiet although the service was surprisingly slow despite this. It didn't spoil our meal as we were happy to have a long lunch and the food was excellent. One particular member of staff couldn't speak or understand english very well which made things a little tricky also. I would consider going again but it wouldn't necessarily be my first choice.

Three of my friends was running a bit late being stuck in traffic from Wolverhampton. I called to ask if we could push the reservation 30 minutes later but whoever answered the call at Malmaison made a fuss about a few large groups coming in. Fair enough, so we decided to go to Lazeez instead.

We visited Malmaison on Satuday night and it had a good atmosphere. Ordering wine proved to be hard to do, the wine waitress was very elusive and we had to leave the table to ask for our order to be taken. Our second wine order also failed to arrive until we reminded the waitress. No shellfish was requested in a main course as one of our party had an allergy, it still appeared! Cheesecake was disappointing being small and dry and had to be returned, although this was taken off our bill.

Great location in Mailbox. Quite slow service at bar despite it not being too overcrowded.Ordered still water with meal which never arrived but appeared on bill. When explained we'd not received it the guy seemed genuinely mortified and apologetic. Staff all pleasant and polite. Our server was v knowledgeable about dishes etc. Staff all really pleasant and attentive. Would go back again fo just drinks and / or meal. Good choice on menu and nice intor to city we're not familiar with.

Malmaison was a disappointment. The food was blandly average at best and the service was slow even though the restaurant was barely half full. Whilst the decor compenstated to a limited extent, it didn't justify paying over the odds for basic, average food. Would perhaps return to use the bar as the surroundings are impressive but I wouldn't set foot in the restauarant again.

The 2 course meal we had at Malmaison Brasserie was excellent value for money. The food was good but the quality of the food and ambience was of a very high standard. I would definitely go again - although watch out for the wine menu as it was a little over-priced.
