Food was excellent. It was just a pity thst the service did not match. we were led to a small room on the first floor that resembled a 60s disco - red lighting, black glass tables and black plastic high-backed chairs. Drinks arrived quickly, but we waited 25 minutes for our food orders. Food was excellent when it arrived, but took so long that we passed on starters. The room was also rather cold. On the way out, we had to wait 10 minutes for someone to retrieve our coats.

Having visited once before and enjoyed the experience, we decided to return with more guests. We went on a Saturday evening. Alas, this visit was not too good. We booked the table at 8.30, however, our food order was not taken until 9:15. The food is generally good. But, on this occasion, my main course was somewhat cold. Possible lack of staff contributed to the issues. It was a busy evening. A tad disappointed.

Had an excellent meal at Hengist. Romney Marsh lamb was succulent, full of flavour. Dishes were highly original. Service was first-rate.

Hengist - Only comment would be the ambience, when we walked in everyone was whispering which was uncomfortabke. But after a couple of glasses of wine it was fine!

Sometimes a restaurant just gets it right. Hengist is one of those places. Great atmosphere with perfect lighting, barely perceptible music and well spaced tables. Food was oustanding. Wine was from about £15. One criticism would be that the young waitress who served us at dinner lacked the style and professionalism that the restaurant deserves. But overall we enjoyed our dinner so much we went next day for Sunday lunch! At £16.95 it's a steal. One of our favourite eating places.

We had an excellent lunch here. At £12.95 for 3 courses it was very good value. It was quite busy for a tuesday lunch time, yet the service was very good if slightly rushed. The set menu choices were really good too and we had trouble deciding what to have. All most delicious.!

Dining at the Hengist was a treat. Food is of good quality and excellently cooked and presentation of food is outstanding. Extensive wine list which caters for all pockets. Service was attentive and good however would a few smiles from the staff would have not gone amiss. Would recommend this restaurant for a special occasion.
