Cafe 8 is a nice little restaurant serving tasty food. No fancy sauces or crazy plates. Just very good basic food. I had a rare steak that was delicious. I recommend their chicken liver creamy pate.

Cafe No 8 in York - as the toptable ad said - a hiddden gem. The ambience was great, the staff friendly and the food delicious - especially the goats cheese and caramalized fennel tart, the blue cheese stuffed figs and the apple and cinnamon cheese cake. I throughly recommend this cafe only just outside the city wall.

We went to Cafe No. 8 based on the reviews here and my expectations were much too high. The food was excellent but this is definitely not a "nice" restaurant - there is no ambience, it is literally like a cafe, and the service was disappointing. If you want a casual meal out with good food then this is a good choice, but don't expect a fine dining experience.

Cafe no 8 is a tiny, unassuming bistro, and being unfamiliar with York and without a phone to let them know, we arrived, flustered, 10 minutes late. "Not a problem!", the waitress beamed and with that the tone for the evening was set. The food was truly delicious: my only criticism would be that the figs with blue cheese were so good that they set a standard the main course, although valiantly trying, could not hope to live up to. Not much of a criticism then! Highly recommended.

Hopefully Cafe 8 will move to more spacious digs soon so that more people can enjoy their great food. It is a shame that such wonderful food is served in such a cramped setting. Most tables are near the door. Figs and blue cheese salad was lovely as was the chicken liver pate we shared as an appetizer. Vegetarian tangine very nice too. Stop by when you are in York.
